Subject: My first GD show
Subject: My first GD show
By this point, at the age of 17, I had seen over 20 events at the Cap Centre. Many were arena rock shows. So I walked in thinking it would be another rock show, maybe a bit different due to the crowd. Little did I know then.
Bus did not come by though, that happened 6/20/83. Still, a nice start to a life long addiction.
Musically, I'll start with my first impression as I got there. Why is it not loud? It probably had to do with my previous listening in that space. But, to this day, I think they should have cranked the volume up.
While I love Bob, someone take his slide away. Ran out during Red Rooster to do a bathroom break, and to this day I do that during Bob slide songs. Except Brother Esau, which is great. I listened to this and realized I forgot that Brent joined in to the auditory assault with Rooster.
Oddly, Jerry did not make much of an impression. But the drummers did. This was the only time I saw "The Beast". I was into drums and space this show.
I got to see the first 'Touch of Grey'. I left the show feeling like I had heard some of the songs before. Probably due to 'NFA','Around and Around' and 'Good Lovin'. But the whole show felt familiar.
What's great about this show is that it's a decent first show. Average is fine. Not a train wreck, and not outstanding.
The recording? It has issues. EMWISE above would be the better judge. I'm just happy that I can go back in time to hear this show.

Subject: Who could pass up a Charlie Miller audience?
Obviously this was made with Healy's AKG mics and recorded at the board so you are getting as good an audience recording as you possibly can for this era. It gets a bit crunchy at times (like Saint and NFA), but that just gives you a sense of the volume levels they're getting on this analog gem. The first set in this show is like a second set w a few first set tunes in the middle. Playin' jam theme runs through a lot of the show: Playin > Crazy Fingers > Playin' to start never gets any complaints from me, Bob lags a bit on the transition out of the minor Fingers jam but after some more Playin they land safely into Red Rooster. Roses is really sweet, more Playin' after goes into a jamming Let it Grow. The II set opening Shakedown is killer which winds up going back into Playin' during the final lead-out before landing us into a Sailor > (and a blistering) Saint. The pre NFA jam is really sweet, NFA is very spirited and the Stella is beautiful w/ a lovely jam at the end. Charlie, thanks so much for getting this gem out and a big thanks to Streeter for the master!
